ESI (Environmental Systems Inc.) is a leader in creating practical, sustainable solutions for commercial and industrial buildings. With its new 34,000-square-foot headquarters in Brookfield, WI, the company was determined to show just how green and efficient a building can be. To carry that spirit of sustainability through to the facility’s interior signage system, ESI turned to Poblocki.

A key challenge was matching the interior signage to the building’s unique architecture, the exterior of which features reclaimed Corten steel, a distinctive alloy that develops a pleasing patina that improves with time. Poblocki first sought to use Corten as signage back plates, but we quickly identified feasibility issues due to the weathering requirements and weight of the material. Applying our deep knowledge and experience, we uncovered a better solution: aluminum back plates painted with a low-VOC rust effect paint that closely matches the Corten look.

The end result is an interior signage system that enhances the ESI headquarters’ architecture while supporting the company’s commitment to sustainability, with 100 percent recyclable signs made of significant portions of recycled content.
